Novo Vizcayanos appeal to DENR
Over two hundred residents from seven barangays in Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya initiated a dialogue on August 31, 2016 with Environment Secretary Gina Lopez to gave assurance that they are partners of the government in protecting the environment.
The residents appealed to Sec. Lopez to not to stop on the mining operation of OceanaGold for its has been bringing development and progress in the area.
“ We assure Secretary Lopez that the people’s welfare will always be the priority of OceanaGold Philippines while conducting their operations in Didipio,” Junjun Pugong, Didipio Barangay Chair.
Secretary Lopez emphasized during the dialogue that her mandate as DENR secretary is to clear up irresponsible diggers who devastate the land, lush farms into veritable wasteland.
Townfolks said that the company has brought good things to their community and an instrument in bringing progress in Vizcaya.
The residents were mostly from Barangay Didipio and nearby barangays namely: Bellet. Binogawan, Capisaan, Upper Tuccod, Lower Tuccod, Wangal, Alimit, Papaya, Alloy, and Dingasaan.

Australian miner OceanaGold Corp said on Tuesday it has not received an order from a Philippine mining agency to suspend its operations in the country and that activity at its gold-copper mine is continuing.
"The company will consider all avenues, including working collaboratively with the DENR, to facilitate the immediate resolution of this matter to ensure no disruption to our operations and our valued local workforce," the company said in a statement, referring to the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
"We are disappointed with the statements made earlier today and will seek clarification and reconsideration from the DENR to further understand and rectify this matter in short order," OceanaGold CEO Mick Wilkes said in the statement.
OceanaGold runs the Didipio mine in the northern Luzon island and is the Philippines' top gold producer. It was among those ordered suspended by the DENR for environmental infractions.
Wilkes earlier told Reuters that OceanaGold has not committed environmental violations.
Shares of the Australia-listed miner fell 8.2 percent on the news of the suspension order, prompting the firm to request a trading halt pending an announcement. (Reporting by Manolo Serapio Jr.; Editing by Himani Sarkar)

To inform the people on the recent issues and development of mining activities per province, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. II spearheaded Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign per province as part of its communication plan for year 2016.
The IEC campaign was spearheaded by Regional Director Mario A. Ancheta as head of the IEC team of the bureau.
The Bureau presented before the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) during their regular session.
The team presented to SP Isabela on September 26, 2016; Quirino on September 27, 2016; Nueva Vizcaya on October 3 and 11, 2016; and Cagayanon December 3 and 15, 2016.
For the presentation in SP Nueva Vizcaya, the team discussed the mining operations of OceanaGold Philippines Incorporated, FCF Minerals Corporation as well other mining issues in the province.
For SP Isabela, operation of Geogen Corporation and Golden summit were tackled during the session.
The allocation of Social Development and Management Program (SDMP) of OceanaGold and other taxes were also discussed during the presentation of the team in SP Quirino.
On the other hand, the IEC team informed the board members of Cagayan regarding the status of black sand mining in the province and other quarry activities in Cagayan.

Environment Secretary Gina Lopez ordered the mine audit of OceanaGold after a petition from anti-mining activists to cancel its exploration permit renewal for an expansion.

“ Public awareness about geologic hazards is important to mitigate its impact”, said Regional Director Engr. Mario A, Ancheta during the Information, Education and Communication (IEC) drive on Geohazard Assessment and Mapping Program at Valley Hotel, Alimanao Hills, Penablanca, Cagayan held last August 30-31, 2016.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau thru its Geosciences Division intensified its IEC campaign by inviting local leaders and their barangay officials to inform them on the impacts of geologic hazards in the community.
Lectures focused on rain-induced landslide hazard, flood hazard and hazard in Karst Areas.
The IEC drive likewise presented to the LGUs of Tuguegarao City and Penablanca, Cagayan the 1:10,000 flood and landslide susceptibility maps of their respective barangays.
Geologists from MGB R0II explained to the local officials the use of the maps that will serve as their guides in their community-based disaster preparedness plans, comprehensive land use plans, development plans and identification of relocation sites in case of landslide and flooding incidents in their area.
In the year 2014, the Bureau has already completed the assessment of 93 cities/municipalities and over 2,000 barangays in the Cagayan Valley Region for their 1:10,000 mapping scale.
For 2015 onwards, MGB has been conducting region-wide IEC to educate the local government officials on geohazard. #LRB
